Smart Bangladesh Award 2023 for ICT-based Early Warning Response Mechanism

AOSED received the prestigious "Smart Bangladesh Award-2023" in recognition of its exceptional role as a leading organization in fostering resilience and expertise among coastal districts through an ICT-based Early Warning Response Mechanism. The award was presented during the Sheikh Russel Day 2023 ceremony held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center on October 18, 2023. The event's chief guest, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was in attendance for the award presentation. The southern coastal areas of Bangladesh, where approximately 3 million people reside and depend predominantly on engine-driven small boats for their livelihoods in the coastal and adjacent areas, have experienced an exponential growth in vulnerabilities to climate change-induced disasters (cyclones, depression, storm surges, salinity) over the last two decades. Consequently, the income of the coastal people has decreased, mirroring the impact on their livelihoods. The climate change-induced impacts, as well as the various natural hazards have exacerbated vulnerabilities to disasters in the coastal districts. By utilizing this system, real-time vessel tracking from central monitoring hubs to the coastal areas and communicating essential weather-related information has led to increased resilience among coastal districts. Moreover, since the project has been successfully implemented, there are plans for its expansion in the future among the coastal districts. Given the notable success of this project, it is seen as an integral part of the 8th Five-Year Plan of the Government of Bangladesh, SDG 1, 2, 13, and Blue Economy. Climate Education for Secondary School Students in Southwest Bangladesh

In an unprecedented move, AOSED has pioneered a global first: a comprehensive educational initiative targeting the nuanced challenges of climate change in the heart of southwest Bangladesh. From 2003 to 2005, AOSED strategically engaged 65 educational institutions across pivotal regions like Khulna and Jessore, meticulously crafting a curriculum that transcended traditional boundaries under Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change (RVCC) project with collaboration of CARE Bangladesh. Rather than a mere informational campaign, our approach was deeply strategic. We rolled out bespoke educational materials, including avant-garde booklets and interactive flip charts, specifically designed for secondary school students. Parallelly, the AOSED executed intensive training modules for educators, arming them with cutting-edge insights to translate the intricacies of climate dynamics to their classrooms. But what sets this initiative apart in global annals is its sheer courage and innovation. AOSED's efforts in southwest Bangladesh serve as a clarion call, spotlighting the imperative of embedding climate literacy within formal educational paradigms. This paradigm shift hasn't gone unnoticed; policymakers, astutely attuned to the zeitgeist, have affirmed the urgency of such initiatives, heralding a new era where education and climate resilience converge at the crossroads of progress.

Energy Globe Award 2021

Amidst the backdrop of environmental challenges in Bangladesh's southern regions, AOSED stood tall as a beacon of hope, clinching the prestigious Energy Globe Award in 2021 for their groundbreaking project, "Arsenic-free Safe Drinking Water for Schools and Hospitals in Climate Vulnerable Khulna areas." In collaboration with GIZ Bangladesh, AOSED addressed the pressing issue of drinking water scarcity in the Khulna region, where groundwater-based water supply faced a multitude of challenges, including arsenic contamination, declining water levels, salinity, and the unavailability of suitable aquifers. The situation was particularly dire in the Rupsha Upazila under Khulna district, Meherpur, and Pirojpur district where alarming levels of arsenic in drinking water posed a severe health threat to the local population. The project focused on implementing sustainable and community-driven solutions to ensure the availability of safe drinking water. The geographical constraints, such as limited land for water technology installations and the absence of freshwater aquifers at reasonable depths, required innovative and adaptive approaches. Recognizing the inadequacy of previous interventions due to insufficient maintenance, management, and user ownership, AOSED implemented a comprehensive strategy to address these issues. Their efforts extended beyond the installation of Water ATMs in educational institutions and hospitals, the key innovation lay in establishing a self-sufficient community-driven mechanism to ensure the sustainability of these technologies. The challenges were complex, with industrialization exacerbating environmental imbalances, particularly in the Rupsha Upazila. Large-scale shrimp farming and salt manufacturing were limiting open water bodies for daily use, forcing locals to rely on water contaminated with toxic chemicals and metals from the industries. In the face of such adversities, AOSED's project emerged as a beacon of hope, providing arsenic-free safe drinking water to schools and hospitals in the climate-vulnerable Khulna areas. The community-driven approach, combined with innovative technologies and a commitment to sustainability, distinguished AOSED as a national champion in Bangladesh, earning them the esteemed Energy Globe Award in 2021. Their success not only alleviated the immediate water crisis but also set a precedent for effective, community-centric environmental solutions in the face of climate challenges.
